Pictures from
the Redstone Sled Dog Races
| A musher's review of this year's race (reprinted from the Mushers' newsletter) The slow and treacherous drive home from Redstone gave me some time to reflect on how much fun Redstone is to run. Aside from the fact that you actually have to be a driver rather than just a rider at Redstone, it's just great how the town opens their arms to the mushers. They open shops and restaurants that are closed for the winter just for the weekend and Redstone Inn brought "Helmut" the German comedian in for our entertainment Saturday night. He is one of the funniest guys I have every listened to! The snow sculpture on Main Street was a work of art obviously done especially for the mushers. What did they finally name him or her? It is still unbelievable that Judy Wait would pick Redstone for her first ever race at 61 l/2 years young. Not only did she do her first race there but didn't fall Saturday OR Sunday. How many folks can say that. Once again young Erich has won all of our respect for running this same race Saturday and Sunday and completing it. I feel that this is the best run race and the best laid out race course in the state! There is a lot of logic and thought shown in the way they lay out the course and maintain it for weeks ahead. The spectators love the difficulty of the start and the high speed of the finish and I love the variety of terrain through the trees the multitude of turns, and even the up hill parts. And the good condition of the course! Good people, good race, good dogs, good night! I'm beat! Dick Nichols |
