Winter in the Crystal River Valley

Redstone is truly magical in the winter months. It is quieter here in the winter, not like the crowds you’ll find in Aspen or Snowmass. If you are looking for relaxation, you will find it. Come delight in outdoor adventures in our snowy paradise or relax indoors with a cozy warm quilt. Whichever you prefer, it’s hard to deny that it’s easy to find joy in the beauty of a dreamy blanket of soft white snow.

What is Winter Like in Redstone?

Temperatures: Daytime high temperatures in the winter months are in the 20’s (F) and nighttime lows are usually between 10 and 0. We will get a few chilly mornings with below-zero temperatures. However, the cold air always feels warmer in the sunshine. The sun makes all the difference.

Snow: The first snowfall usually comes in early October, but most likely won’t stick around long. By November a layer of snow will begin to cover the ground until March. Our snow has a lower moisture content than the mid-west or the Sierra Nevada Mountains. That makes our snow light and fluffy. Redstone averages 169" of snow every year.

Sunshine: Yes, you heard it you’ll feel the warmth of the sunshine frequently in the winter here. Remember your sunblock. There are more sunny days in the winter than cloudy. Yet, Redstone is located on the valley floor of a very narrow canyon and only receives approximately six hours of direct sunlight during the month of January.

Driving Conditions: CDOT does its best to keep roads clear but snow can pile up. Make sure you are following the Colorado Traction Law. Four-wheel drive vehicles can drive through snow well, but it doesn’t help you stop. Drive safely!

How to Dress: Bring your snow boots and dress in warm layers. Dry feet are warm feet! If you’d tell a kid to wear boots, you should too!

Most of All Winter in Redstone is FUN!

Outdoor Winter Activities

Cross Country Skiing: Coal Creek Basin road is not plowed in the winter making it the perfect cross country ski trail. The road is quiet, scenic and winds its way along Coal Creek. It’s 4 miles to the summer trailhead, but the distances are not limited to the parking area. Only proceed into Coal Creek Basin beyond the summer trailhead if you are experienced in the backcountry.

Ron’s Ice Skating Rink: Borrow some skates from the skate shack, play some ice hockey or just take a few laps on Ron’s Rink. The Redstone Community Association and its volunteers construct and maintain the ice skating rink all winter long to offer free skating to locals and visitors to Redstone. Great for kids (big kids welcome too!) It’s a small rink so be courteous of others. Please remember to return your equipment and hang up your skates. Donations appreciated!

Snowshoeing: When hiking trails get covered in snow they can still be accessed with snowshoes. Here are a few of our favorites: East Creek, Coal Creek Basin Road, the OST loop. Snowshoes can be rented at the Redstone General Store.

Backcountry Skiing: There is access to backcountry skiing in the Crystal River Valley. Be prepared, know the terrain and always check the avalanche report!

Photography: Winter is an amazing time to take photos. The contrast of white against our rugged mountain landscape and red cliffs is stunning, especially on bluebird days. Once you start to look around you’ll begin to see the hidden beauty all around you.
